The Detroit Tigers acquire catcher Tucker Barnhart from the Reds

The Tigers announced that they traded for veteran catcher Tucker Barnhart from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for minor league third baseman Nick Quintana.

Barnhart will likely be the Tigers’ primary catcher, allowing Eric Haase to play other positions when he isn’t catching. Barnhart is known around the league as a great defensive back stop, winning two NL Gold Gloves at the position.

Quintana was a 2nd round pick out of Arizona for the Tigers. He has struggled mightily in the minor leagues so far, with an OPS of just .607. He just turned 24 and has not played past A ball in the Tigers minor league system. Despite this, FanGraphs still had him ranked as the Tigers 13th best prospect, while did not have him ranked among the team’s top 30.
