The Detroit Red Wings are letting their 2015 first round pick test the free agency market. After some up and down professional years, Evgeny Svechnikov was not tendered a qualifying offer as a restricted free agent, so will be free to sign with any team.
Svechnikov played just 41 games in four seasons at the NHL level. He suffered a torn ACL in 2019 causing him to miss all of 2019-2020. He was only able to amass five goals and 12 points for the Red Wings.
His best season as a professional was in 2015-16 when he scored 20 goals and 51 points with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins as a 20 year old. It looked like Svechinikov was going to make good on his potential, but never found a place in the Detroit line-up.
Evgeny’s younger brother, Andrei, is a star player for the Carolina Hurricanes.
