Rachel Nichols has been in the news today due to comments she made last year that were recently leaked.
Nichols went on her show, The Jump, on ESPN today to apologize for the comments. But what were the comments she made?
The leaked audio, which was Nichols speaking to Adam Mendelsohn seeking advice for her role at the network, made reference to Maria Taylor. Taylor has been a rising star at the network and is a fixture on the College Gameday broadcasts.
So what did Rachel Nichols say?:
“I wish Maria Taylor all the success in the world — she covers football, she covers basketball, If you need to give her more things to do because you are feeling pressure about your crappy longtime record on diversity — which, by the way, I know personally from the female side of it — like, go for it. Just find it somewhere else. You are not going to find it from me or taking my thing away.”
Nichols was voicing frustration that Taylor was surpassing her on the “depth chart” to host the NBA Finals. Nichols has been with the company longer and was criticizing the politics of the network.
My comment on the situation: ESPN has been in decline for decades and I don’t care about any of the things they do.
